New St. Augustine Statue Commissioned by Donors unveiled

Standing prominently in front of the USA Main Building is the new 13-foot bronze St. Augustine the Scholar statue that was unveiled to the public last December 13, 2013.

The new statue was conceptualized to be in line with the University’s celebration of its 60th year as the first University in Western Visayas. It was commissioned through the generosity of 60 donors who donated P 60,00.00 each.

Ronald Castrillo, a renowned artist from Aklan, was the man behind the creation of the bronze icon, while the 9-foot black granite base was made by AC Tajanlangit Construction Builders and Development, Corp.
Prior to the unveiling, the donors were individually called up on stage to receive their Certificates and Tokens of Appreciation for their generous contribution.

The event was graced by the Municipality of Anilao Mayor, Ma. Theresa Debuque and Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog. They both led the ceremonial unveiling of the Statue.

Mabilog said that the new statue will serve as one of the latest additions to the tourism sites in Iloilo City. He added that he will be donation another P 60,000 for the statue in honor of his wife, an alumna of the University.
The unveiling was celebrated together with “KaSanAg sang Paskwa,” the University’s annual Christmas Lighting Ceremony which showcased a display of candles representing the areas affected by the recent typhoon Yolanda.
