In an innovative initiative that challenges traditional workplace roles, the University of San Agustin has embarked on a journey to empower its non-academic personnel (NAP) through research. The University Personnel Growth and Research Advancement for Development and Excellence (UPGRADE) program recently hosted a remarkable Research Proposal Pitching event on March 26, 2025, at the Sam’s 21 Hotel, that transformed administrative staff into budding researchers.
Fourteen university units/offices participated in this transformative program, presenting research studies that went beyond typical office responsibilities. The event not only provided a platform for creative thinking but also demonstrated the university’s commitment to holistic professional growth. It is noteworthy that most of the study they have presented geared towards more understanding and improvement of the office operations and processes.
The participants were supported by an exceptional team of panelists: Dr. Garry C. Cachuela, Ms. Windy T. Dela Cruz, and Dr. Matthew T. Lasap and diligently guided by their mentors, Dr. Alexander Balsomo, Prof. Rosemarie Java, Ms. Sheena Balinsoy and Dr. Geneveve Parreño-Lachica.
The event resonated with participants, offering insights that exceeded traditional workplace boundaries.
Krystal Shane Torres from the Social Advocacy and Community Engagement Office (SACEO) shared her transformative experience: “The presentation was more than just a pitch. It was a journey of discovery. We gained valuable insights into research methodology, learned to anticipate challenges, and received constructive feedback that sharpened our proposals. Most importantly, it strengthened our team’s collaborative spirit.”
Atty. Cydele Sonza from the Institutional Legal Counsel (ILC), who’s in partnership with the Office of the President, offered a unique perspective: “This initiative breaks the monotony of routine office work. It’s an opportunity to step into a researcher’s shoes, engage in critical thinking, and potentially develop solutions that could enhance our operational effectiveness.”
Mrs. Margarita Segovia from the Human Resource Management Office captured the event’s spirit: “We were nervous yet excited. The communal atmosphere united us with a shared goal – to contribute to the university’s research capabilities and foster a culture of continuous learning.”
The NAP Research Proposal Pitching was organized by the Research Publications Services (RPS) Office under the Office of the Vice President for Research and Global Relations, and in partnership with the Human Resource Management Office, the initiative represents a bold step towards creating a more dynamic, intellectually engaged workplace.
By encouraging non-academic personnel to engage in research, the University of San Agustin is breaking down traditional barriers, promoting a culture of curiosity, innovation, and continuous professional development. It’s a powerful reminder that research is not confined to academic departments but can be a transformative tool for growth across all organizational levels.
