Empowering Non-Academic Personnel Through Research: A Step Towards Institutional Excellence

The University of San Agustín (USA) demonstrated its commitment to inclusive growth and institutional development by hosting the  2nd Basic Research Training-Workshop for Non-Academic Personnel on August 19, 2025. Organized by the Research and Publication Services (RPS) under the leadership of Mr. Normon A. Laurista, in collaboration with the Human Resource Management Office (HRMO), the event aimed to demystify research and empower administrative staff, office personnel, and support teams with essential research skills. Held at Citadines Amigo Hotel in Iloilo City, the workshop brought together participants from various university offices for a full day of learning, reflection, and practical application.

The program began with a message from University President Rev. Fr. Arnel S. Dizon, OSA, who underscored the importance of research in achieving the university’s mission of Virtus et Scientia (Virtue and Science). The training sessions, led by esteemed experts such as Dr. Alexander J. Balsomo, Dr. Geneveve M. Parreño-Lachica, Ms. Sheena P. Balinsoy, and Prof. Rosemarie M. Java, covered fundamental research concepts, problem identification, data analysis, and proposal writing. These sessions were designed to make research accessible, showing participants how to apply these skills in their daily work to improve university services.

A key takeaway from the workshop was the emphasis on practicality—participants were encouraged to start small by utilizing existing office data rather than aiming for complex studies. This approach not only made research less intimidating but also highlighted its immediate relevance to their roles. The event also stressed the importance of sustainability, urging attendees to maintain their enthusiasm for research and contribute to the university’s long-term strategic goals. The workshop’s focus on skill development, institutional improvement, and data-driven decision-making naturally aligns with global objectives such as quality education, decent work and economic growth, and strong institutions.

The success of the workshop was a testament to the collaborative efforts of the university administration, the RPS, and the HRMO, as well as the expertise of the resource speakers from West Visayas State University (WVSU). In his closing remarks, Mr. John Paul Petrola, Officer-in-charge, Office of the Vice President for Research and Global Relations, reminded participants that this training was just the beginning—the continued engagement with research would determine its lasting impact. He added that taking these are important steps inunderstanding the value of research, which is not just in academic, but in everyday problem-solving and innovation that will help fuel informed decision-making in every office.

As the non-academic personnel of USA return to their respective offices, they carry with them not just new skills but also the responsibility to foster a culture of inquiry and transformation. This initiative marks a significant milestone in the university’s journey toward excellence, proving that research is not confined to academics but is a powerful tool for institutional growth and service improvement. (oco)
