AB Comm program conducts mentoring program on basic video editing and lighting

Iloilo City – The AB Communication Program and the Augustinian Communicators’ Guild conducted a mentoring program focused on basic video editing and lighting, featuring two accomplished alumni from the program. This hands-on workshop aimed to equip currently enrolled Communication majors with practical skills essential for today’s media landscape.

The mentoring program, held last 7 September 2024, began with speaker Howard Villoso, former editor of Iloilo-based Mayad Post Production and current media practitioner and Lyka Las Pinas, former technical director of the USA Little Theater, both AB Comm Alumni and now thriving professionals in the media and communication industry. With experience in video production and post-production, they returned to their alma mater to share their knowledge, providing students with invaluable insights into the technical aspects of video editing and lighting that are crucial for content creation in modern media.

The mentoring initiative not only strengthened the students’ technical proficiency but also built a bridge between classroom learning and real-world application.

The mentoring program was divided into two sessions. Mr. Villoso conducted a session on Basic Video Editing, in which students learned foundational skills in editing, including information on industry-standard software, organizing footage, use of transitions, and the importance of cohesive storytelling through video. He guided students through the best practices for creating professional-quality video.

On the other hand, Ms. Las Pinas, a lighting specialist, talked about lighting techniques. She emphasized the pivotal role of lighting in production, introducing students to essential lighting techniques. This included understanding lighting setups for different environments, how to create mood and depth in a scene, and troubleshooting common lighting challenges.

“I am very much grateful because the students acknowledge that they need to upgrade their skills,” Dr. Rhoda G. Campillan, AB Communication Academic Supervisor said of the recent initiative. “And what is more special, is that the source of the skills are the alumni. There is a collaboration between our students and alumni.”

The workshops took place at the University of San Agustin College of Pharmacy and Medical Technology Building and was conducted for currently enrolled Communication majors.

This mentoring program is part of the AB Communication Program’s ongoing effort to foster stronger connections between alumni and current students. By tapping into the expertise of successful graduates, the program ensures that students are receiving not only theoretical knowledge but also practical skills that enhance their career readiness. The ACG, through its president, Hannah Tanaleon, was also instrumental in ensuring the success of the initiative.

It is hoped that this mentoring program will serve as a catalyst for students to explore their creative potential and become more confident in their technical abilities. The involvement of AB Communication alumni demonstrated the willingness of AB Comm graduates to support the next generation of communicators. The event is a testament to the continued support and engagement of the AB Comm alumni community and their commitment to fostering future media professionals.

CLASE is under the leadership of its dean, Dr. Nenelyn de la Fuente, whereas the AB Comm program is led by its academic supervisor, Dr. Campillan.
