BS Biology Students Secure 2nd Place in 20th Regional Student Research Contest

BS Biology student researchers Joanna Micaella D. Aposin, Eubie Rafeielle M. Cordero, Thea G. Maguad, and Jonathan Aron N. Velonero secured 2nd Place among 12 contenders during the 20th Regional Student Research Contest (Tertiary Level) of the Biology Teachers Association of the Philippines – Western Visayas Chapter.

The competition was held on March 6, 2026, at the University Research and Development Center, Function Hall, West Visayas State University, Luna St., La Paz, Iloilo City.

Their study entitled “Phytochemical Screening and Comparative Analysis of Antibacterial Activity of Talisay (Terminalia catappa) Bark, Fruit, and Leaf Extracts Against Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)” was presented by Jonathan Aron N. Velonero.

The research was conducted under the guidance of Adviser Dr. Relicardo Coloso and Research Teacher Dr. Mary Lou C. Arabaca. The researchers also extend their sincere gratitude to the Center of Chemical Biology and Biotechnology (C2B2) headed by Dr. Doralyn S. Dalisay, and to Ms. May Octaviano for their invaluable technical assistance during the conduct of the study.

The USA Department of Biology likewise expresses its appreciation to Angelo Ordaniel, Karen Claire Ebreo, Ivanne Pearl Guillermo, and Germay Jean Collado for their presence and mentorship in accompanying the student researchers throughout the event.

Great achievements are not accomplished alone; they are the result of shared dedication and the collective effort of a committed team.
