Iloilo City, Philippines — The University of San Agustin’s Center for Religious Studies (CRS) and the USA Archives and Museum have unveiled the “Bugay Exhibit Saint Augustine’s Conversion: A Gift to the Church.” This event celebrates the birth anniversary of St. Augustine of Hippo and showcases his life and teachings through art. The exhibit also includes educational modules to deepen understanding and inspire reflection.
The exhibit highlights St. Augustine’s transformative journey and his impact as a gift to his friends, family, and the Church. Visitors can explore his philosophical and theological insights, emphasizing his enduring legacy as a pivotal figure whose teachings continue to inspire generations.
Featuring 17 panels of paintings, the exhibit creatively portrays various aspects of St. Augustine’s life and spiritual journey. What makes this exhibit unique is its innovative use of space and educational content. University Archivist and Curator Rev. Fr. Dominador Besares explained, “The exhibit is more comprehensive and encouraging. Aside from the 17 panels of paintings, it is backed up literally at the back of the paintings. On the other side of the standees are a series of teaching modules ranging from spiritual, theological, and philosophical teachings of St. Augustine to complement the online module of teaching.”
This approach not only enriches the visual experience but also serves as an educational tool for students and visitors. It offers a rare chance to engage with both art and academia simultaneously, providing a deeper understanding of St. Augustine’s teachings.
Rev. Fr. Jebie Jugarap, OSA, Director of the Center for Religious Studies, highlighted the collaborative spirit behind the exhibit. He noted it was conceptualized by former CRS Director Rev. Fr. Rodel Magin, OSA. “This exhibit aligns with the celebration of the 120th founding anniversary of the university and provides students with a deeper understanding of St. Augustine’s life through the artworks,” Fr. Jugarap said.
The Bugay Exhibit exemplifies how art can serve as a medium for education and inspiration. It invites visitors to explore St. Augustine’s rich legacy, creating a space where art and learning come together for a profound cultural and educational experience.
The exhibit is open to the public from November 11-15, 2024, at the USA Pavilion, offering a unique opportunity for the community to engage with the life and legacy of one of history’s great thinkers.
