Dr. Richard R. Jugar, Ph.D., FHEA from the School of Education at the University of San Carlos, led an engaging seminar-workshop titled “Curating and Integrating Authentic Assessment: Translating its Definition into Curricular Artifacts” on July 17-18, 2024, in Iloilo City. Coordinated by CALOHEA, this event aimed to enhance the implementation of authentic assessment within academic programs.
Dr. Jugar promoted the use of authentic assessment, which allows students to demonstrate their learning outcomes at both the program and institutional levels. He explained that authentic assessment requires students to perform tasks that involve meaningful and integrated application of academic knowledge, skills, and understanding.
During the workshop, participants actively redesigned their assessments to ensure alignment with their program outcomes. They mapped and referenced curriculum components to create meaningful assessments that mirror real-world scenarios, preparing students for professional success and personal growth.
The seminar also covered the importance of constructive alignment within the curriculum. Dr. Jugar emphasized aligning teaching methods, learning activities, and assessment tasks with intended learning outcomes. Participants revisited and revised their assessment strategies, incorporating both online and onsite components to create a seamless integration of different teaching modalities.
In practical workshops, participants applied these concepts by developing authentic assessments tailored to their specific program outcomes. They considered factors such as workload, assessment format, and the integration of relevant skills and knowledge.
Dr. Jugar’s seminar-workshop provided valuable insights and practical tools for educators. By actively enhancing their curriculum and assessment strategies, educators aim to improve student learning outcomes and prepare them for real-world challenges.
