The University of San Agustin Research Ethics Review Committee (USA RERC) of the Research and Publication Services (RPS), Office of the Vice President for Research and Global Relations, holds Basic Research Ethics Training (BRET), which is taking place from November 28-29, 2024, at the Sam’s 21 Hotel in Iloilo City. The training is facilitated by the Philippine Health Research Ethics Board (PHREB), Regional Ethics Monitoring VI.
This engaging two-day event is a beacon of knowledge, guiding researchers and aspiring scholars towards the pinnacles of ethical and meaningful investigations. Attendees are in for a transformative experience, with a lineup of prominent speakers that includes the inimitable Prof. Lerma L. Paris, Chair of the Regional Ethics Monitoring Board (REMB) VI Committee on Information Dissemination, Training and Advocacy (CIDTA), and Dr. Edna A. Mendez, member of PHREB Committee on Standards and Accreditation and CIDTA and Non-Affiliated Member of the WVSU-URERC.
On the first day, Ms. May B. Osano, Chair of the USA Research Ethics Review Committee, underscored the crucial importance of this training for researchers, advisers, reviewers, and committee members. The primary objectives are to equip everyone with the ethical principles and standards for research, especially when it involves human participants, and to encourage the sharing of these ethical frameworks with students and colleagues.” The goal is to foster a collective responsibility to practice ethical research practices, ensuring the welfare and safety of human participants,” said Ms. Osano. “This will ultimately elevate research ethics standards in our community.”
The training for day one also emphasizes the significance of gender and cultural sensitivity, as well as considerations for third parties, further solidifying its commitment to comprehensive ethical research practices. Key topics include Ethics and Research, Defining Research Principles, Favorable Benefits and Risks, Preparing Adequate and Appropriate Informed Consent Processes and Forms, and Selecting Participants Fairly.
As the Augustinian community undergoes this transformative training, the future of research excellence in the Philippines continues to shine brighter than ever before. /TSA
