Feast of Saint Monica

The Catholic Church pays tribute to St. Monica on August 27, just one day before her son St. Augustine’s feast day. St. Monica’s devout life and fervent prayers played a pivotal role in one of the most striking conversions in Church history.

Born in 332, she hailed from a Catholic family in the North African city of Tagaste, now part of Algeria. Her upbringing was guided by a maidservant who instilled in her the values of obedience and temperance. At a young age, she married Patricius, a Roman civil servant known for his irritable nature and lack of regard for his wife’s faith.
