Exploring “Bytes and Bites”: University of San Agustin Hosts EU Jean Monnet Lecture on Food, Culture, and the Digital World

The University of San Agustin (USA), through its International Relations Office (IRO) with the support of the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union, successfully hosted the European Union (EU) Jean Monnet Lecture on 13 October 2025, at the 7th Floor of the Pharmacy and Medical Technology (PMT) Building.

The lecture was delivered by Dr. Manuel “BJ” R. Enverga III, Jean Monnet Chair in European Studies and Director of the European Studies Department at the Ateneo de Manila University. Dr. Enverga is the first Filipino to receive this prestigious distinction from the European Union and among only a few academics in Southeast Asia to hold the title.

In his lecture, “Bytes and Bites: The Politics of Food in a Digital World,” Dr. Enverga explored how food, politics, and digital culture intersect—highlighting European Union food law, gastronationalism, and the influence of social media in shaping cultural identity. He also reflected on how Iloilo’s designation as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy connects its rich culinary traditions with global efforts to safeguard and promote cultural heritage.

In his welcome remarks, Rev. Fr. Aimark P. Asor, OSA, Vice President for Administration and Finance, emphasized the importance of the Augustinian values of Caritas, Veritas, et Unitas—love, truth, and unity—as guiding principles for engaging with the global community while remaining firmly rooted in identity and service.

The program was further enlivened by the inspiring performances of the University of San Agustin Choirs and Troubadours, whose musical interludes celebrated Augustinian artistry and hospitality. Their performances added a cultural flourish that captured the event’s spirit of unity and exchange.

In his closing message, Director John Paul P. Mondejar of the International Relations Office, expressed gratitude to Dr. Enverga, the University administration, and the various units that supported the program. He reaffirmed the IRO’s continuing commitment to forming and empowering global Augustinians—individuals who are intellectually grounded, culturally aware, and compassionately engaged with the world.

The Jean Monnet Lecture forms part of the University’s continuing efforts to promote academic internationalization, intercultural dialogue, and the Augustinian mission of developing globally competent and socially committed leaders.
