The Office of the Iloilo City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management partnered with the University of San Agustin Social Advocacy and Community Engagement Office (USA SACEO) to roll out the pilot phase of a specialized learning material designed to build early disaster awareness among young children.
Held at the San Isidro, Jaro Child Development Center, the orientation and workshop formed part of the Climate and Disaster Resilience Advocacy Materials (CDRAMA) project, which aims to make safety and resilience concepts accessible to different sectors, especially early childhood learners. The activity was attended by six daycare workers and seven young learners from the center.
Ms. Lucila Bade of the Iloilo City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) facilitated the morning session, while Mr. Frank Emboltura presented and demonstrated the DRR Alphabet Learning Guide. The resource introduces key safety concepts through the local alphabet, beginning with “A stands for Asu”—the Kinaray-a/Hiligaynon term for fire. To make learning engaging and age-appropriate, the guide is paired with custom sensory materials developed by the University’s Education Department.
The session also served as a coordination meeting to finalize protocols for the upcoming full pilot implementation and field validation, which will gather feedback to refine the resource before its wider rollout.
