Local Youth Actions for SDGs and Beyond: Highlights from Linggo ng Kabataan

SACEO in collaboration with the Social Sciences Department, successfully conducted the “Linggo ng Kabataan” event on August 16, 2025. This year’s theme, “Local Youth Actions for SDG’s and Beyond,” aimed to empower young individuals to take proactive roles in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within their community.

The event featured two resource speakers: Mr. Clark Abelido, who discussed the 17
SDG’s and its relevance to the community and Mr. Adrian Camposagrado, who shared insights on what the youth can do in localizing SDGs. A total of twenty (20) youth and Sangguniang Kabataan participants from Barangay Cubay, Jaro, actively engaged in the sessions. The participants were divided into four (4) groups, each partnered by members of the Young Educators of Social Sciences Organization (YESSO). The primary activity involved identifying the top ten (10) pressing issues within their barangay. Following this, each group explored how these issues could be linked to specific SDGs. This exercise encouraged the youth to think critically about local challenges in the context of global sustainability goals. Each group then selected a representative to present their findings and proposed solutions to the larger assembly. The presentations stimulated lively discussions and idea-sharing among the participants.

At the conclusion of the activity, each group shared key takeaways and insights gained from the day’s sessions. Common themes included:
• A heightened awareness of the SDGs and their relevance to local issues.
• An increased sense of responsibility and empowerment to address community challenges.
• A stronger understanding of collaborative problem-solving and community engagement.

The “Linggo ng Kabataan” event proved to be a valuable platform for engaging the youth of Barangay Cubay in meaningful discussions about sustainable development. The activity not only enhanced their understanding of the SDGs but also inspired them to take concrete actions towards building a more sustainable and equitable future for their community. The Social Sciences Department and SACEO are committed to continuing such initiatives to further empower the youth and foster community development.
