The University of San Agustin (USA) recently held a comprehensive training on ISO 31000:2018, focusing on risk management, at the Days Hotel by Wyndham in Iloilo City on September 23-24, 2024. The event, organized by the International Quality Assurance Office (IQAO), gathered top management, deans, the principal, unit directors, and heads of various offices from the university and the members of the Enterprise Risk and Opportunities Management Office (EROMO). The team will be responsible for processing the requirements for the proposed transition to ISO 21001:2018 and the overall Chair is the University President.
University President Rev. Fr. Arnel S. Dizon, OSA emphasized the importance of effective risk management in enhancing the university’s governance and operational performance. The training was given by Mr. Teodoro Ramirez Jr., a consultant from AGF Consulting Group, as the resource speaker, who shared insights on the significance of ISO 31000:2018.
Organizations can include risk-based decision-making into their planning, governance, and management procedures by using the framework offered by ISO 31000:2018. This widely accepted standard provides guidance on how to incorporate risk management into the principles, rules, and culture of the university in order to promote a proactive response to possible difficulties.
Mr. Ramirez pointed out that ISO 31000 has many advantages, and it helps organizations in developing a strong risk management strategy, effectively identifying and mitigating risks, and ultimately enhancing the protection of their assets. Moreover, it encourages a management culture that values informed decision-making.
Several major benefits of adopting ISO 31000 were highlighted through various activities carried out by participants during the training, including the ability to recognize negative outcomes connected with risks, improve governance, and boost overall organizational performance. However, participants were reminded that ISO 31000 is a guideline rather than a certification requirement, which means that enterprises can apply its principles without formal certification.
As the University of San Agustin continues to strive for excellence in education and administration, the implementation of ISO 31000 principles is expected to have a profound impact. The training equips the university with the necessary tools to navigate risks effectively, ultimately enhancing the institution’s commitment to integrating risk-based practices into its operations.
As a leading educational institution, the University of San Agustin recognizes the importance of proactive risk management. This training will help its leaders and stakeholders strengthen their decision-making processes and enhance their overall resilience in the face of emerging challenges.
The successful implementation of ISO 31000:2018 at the University of San Agustin is expected to have a positive impact on the institution’s governance, performance, and ability to navigate the complex landscape of higher education. (tsa)
