The University of San Agustin – College of Law proudly represented the Philippines for the fourth consecutive year in the prestigious International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Moot Court Competition in Hong Kong, held from March 12 to 15. The team earned remarkable recognition, further strengthening its reputation for excellence in moot court competitions.
This team made its mark this year, earning the 1st Honorable Submission for the Defense and the 2nd Honorable Submission for the Prosecution, further cementing its presence on the international stage.
The debates revolved around hypothetical case scenarios, tackling the legitimacy of AI weapons, autonomous military systems, and civilian detention during armed conflicts.
USA-COL’s IHL Moot Court team consisted of the following members: Gabriel Dominique Yngcong (Head Researcher), Carl-Andre Sanchez (Second Counsel), Gie Ann Marie Aloro (First Counsel and Team Captain), and Kathlyn Marie Lim (Researcher), with Atty. Anfred Panes serving as Coach/Advisor and Isaiah Daniel Javier as Proxy Coach.
Since joining the regional International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Moot in 2022, the University of San Agustin – Iloilo has consistently delivered exceptional performances and earned multiple prestigious awards. Most notably, the team achieved a historic milestone last year by emerging as the champion of the competition.
Organized by the Hong Kong Red Cross, this regional competition underscores the importance of humanitarian law and its core principles. As the custodian of the Geneva Conventions, it aims to instill humanitarian values in educational institutions, fostering a global culture of justice and compassion.
The University of San Agustin – Iloilo takes pride in its dedicated and brilliant team for upholding excellence, embracing humanitarian values, and inspiring future legal advocates.
For the record, the College of Law has been steadily gaining recognition in moot court competitions, excelling from the national to the international stage. This includes prestigious events such as the Philip C. Jessup Moot Court Competition, where another team from the college will represent the Philippines in the international rounds in the United States.
