The University of San Agustin officially commenced its ASEAN Week 2026 celebration on Monday, 03 August 2026, with an opening ceremony held at the USA Auditorium.
Guided by the theme “Caritas in ASEAN: A Celebration that Unites Communities,” the weeklong celebration serves as a platform for promoting regional solidarity, cultural appreciation, and academic excellence within the Augustinian community.
In his welcome remarks, University President Rev. Fr. Arnel S. Dizon, OSA, emphasized that caritas goes beyond being a theme for the celebration, but reflects a fundamental Augustinian value that calls the community to place compassion and concern for others at the heart of its engagement with the region. He underscored that “authentic education forms not only the intellect but also the heart,” highlighting the role of education in cultivating individuals who are not only academically excellent but also compassionate and socially responsible.
The festivities began with a symbolic ceremony led by Fr. Dizon alongside International Relations Office Director John Paul P. Mondejar. Together, they formally marked the opening of the celebration by striking the ceremonial gong, symbolizing the official commencement of ASEAN Week 2026.
The opening program was highlighted by special musical and cultural performances by the USA Choirs and Troubadours and the USA-Kawilihan Dance Troupe, showcasing the University’s vibrant artistic traditions and adding a festive dimension to the celebration.
Following the opening program, university officials led a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open the ASEAN Week Exhibit at the CPMT Lobby. The exhibit features interactive booths curated by students, highlighting the rich heritage, unique traditions, cultures, and cuisines of the various ASEAN member states.
In his closing remarks, IRO Director John Paul P. Mondejar underscored the broader significance of the celebration, noting that ASEAN Week is an opportunity to deepen understanding and strengthen relationships across cultures. He emphasized the importance of “friendship, dialogue, and cooperation” in building stronger regional connections, particularly among young people and educational institutions.
The celebration also reflects the University’s continuing commitment to internationalization through student and faculty mobility, international partnerships, collaborative research, and intercultural engagement, creating opportunities for members of the Augustinian community to participate meaningfully in the wider ASEAN region.
