USA gears up for 5th CALOHEA National Meeting in Iloilo

The University of San Agustin is all set for the fifth CALOHEA National Meeting to be held on May 18-19, 2023, in Iloilo City. USA will be hosting the two-day hybrid event, with participants having the option to attend face-to-face sessions at USA’s facilities and online sessions. In his message, Fr. Frederick Comendador, the USA president, said that the USA is honored to welcome the participants. “The meeting is a valuable opportunity for educators, researchers, and policymakers to come together to discuss and share best practices for measuring and comparing learning outcomes in higher education,” Fr. Comendador continued, stressing that this meeting is an opportunity to “engage in meaningful collaboration and exchange of ideas on higher education quality assurance and the challenges facing universities in today’s rapidly changing global environment” to come up with “innovative solutions” to improve the quality of education for students.

The CALOHEA (Measuring and Comparing Achievements of Learning Outcomes in Higher Education in Asia) Project aims to assist in the internationalization of higher education institutions in Southeast Asia through the development of a series of interconnected measures crucial for the improving recognition of higher education degrees. This involves degree recognition enhancement tools in three subject areas: civil engineering, medicine, and teacher education. Institutions involved in the project will benefit from subject-specific qualification and assessment reference framework which will result in more interest in the degree programs mentioned due to its more authentic assessment of learning outcomes and more student engagement.

The project brings together 31 institutes across eight partner countries in Southeast Asia, namely Cambodia, LAOS PDR, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam, and five countries within Europe. The institutions have teams in the subject areas of Civil Engineering, Medicine, and Teacher Education called Subject Area Groups (SAG). The University of San Agustin, through its Engineering, Teacher Education Programs, and Medical Programs, is part of participating institutions, which were carefully selected based on “shared values and complementary expertise for maximum impact at institutional, national, and regional levels”.

The CALOHEA National Meeting is a dissemination event that aims to promote the CALOHEA Recognition Mechanisms to relevant stakeholders and seek implementation plans for each nation involved in the project. The National Meetings also aim to bridge the knowledge gap between the Project Consortium and other relevant stakeholders in ASEAN Higher Education with the end goal of having mechanisms adopted in the ASEAN region.
