[Iloilo City, 6 Aug 2024] – In an effort to empower local communities and close the gap caused by the so-called “digital divide”, AB Communication students and faculty from the University of San Agustin recently conducted a successful outreach program focused on media literacy and the use of mobile phones as tools for documentation. The initiative is part of the AB Communication program’s ongoing community extension program aimed at fostering education and skills development in underserved areas.
The program, which took place at the La Paz barangay hall last August 6, 2024, was attended by La Paz barangay officials led by Barangay Captain Chichi Rivera. The workshop provided participants with essential skills in media literacy, enabling them to critically evaluate information and use digital tools effectively in their daily lives.
The outreach program was designed to address the growing need for media and information literacy in an age where misinformation and digital manipulation are becoming common. Through a series of interactive sessions, participants learned the basics of media and information literacy, especially as it relates to governance, with discussions on how to distinguish between credible and dubious sources, its ethical implications of media consumption, and responsible social media use. Dr. Rhoda Campillan, academic supervisor of the AB Communication program, and Michelle Bayaua, a faculty member of the program, conducted the media and information literacy workshop.
In addition to media literacy, the program also emphasized the power of mobile phones as tools for documentation. Participants were trained in the basics of using mobile devices to document important community events and stories, and sharing them with community members and others. Lowell Yasas, a fourth year AB Comm student, led the facilitation of the workshop on documentation, different tools that can be used, such as CapCut, and publishing.
During the session, Dr. Campillan emphasized how crucial media and information literacy are in today’s world, and expressed her hope that the sessions would equip the participants with the skills to navigate the digital landscape confidently.
Barangay Captain Rivera welcomed the presence of the USA AB Communication program, with the officials proving to be receptive during the discussion and workshops. The program hopes to continue its partnership with local communities through follow-up activities and support. Participants will be encouraged to apply their new skills in real-world projects in their community. Dr. Campillan expressed her hope that this would just be the beginning of the community’s journey with the AB Comm program. This community outreach was done in partnership with the Augustinian Communicator’s Guild. – MRB
